Implants & Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures

A denture that snaps onto implants instead of relying on adhesive to stay put.

This sits between a conventional denture and a fixed bridge. Two to four implants are placed, and the denture clips onto them. You still take it out to clean it, but while it is in, it does not lift, rock or need adhesive.

For lower dentures especially, it is often transformative. A lower denture has no suction to hold it — there is a tongue in the middle and nothing to seal against — which is why so many people give up on them. Two implants change that completely.

It costs less than a fully fixed arch, needs fewer implants, and is easier to clean because it comes out. The trade-off is that it still comes out, which some people mind and others prefer.

Is this right for me?

  • Your lower denture moves when you eat or talk, or you rely on adhesive to get through the day.
  • You want a big improvement in stability without the cost of a fully fixed arch.
  • You are comfortable taking a denture out each night to clean it properly.

What to expect

  1. Imaging and planning

3D imaging shows where there is bone to work with and how many implants your jaw needs — usually two on the lower, more on the upper.

  2. Placing the implants

A shorter appointment than a full arch. Your existing denture can usually be adjusted to wear over the site while it heals.

  3. Healing

A few months for the bone to grip the implants. We check in during this period rather than leaving you to it.

  4. Fitting the attachments

Attachments go onto the implants and matching housings into the denture. We adjust the tightness with you until it clicks in and out the way you want.

Your comfort

Fewer implants means a shorter appointment and generally an easier recovery than a full fixed arch. If you have struggled with a lower denture for years, the first time it clicks in is usually the moment people remember.

Questions patients ask

How many implants will I need?

Commonly two for a lower denture and four for an upper, because upper bone is softer. The imaging decides it, not a standard package.

Can my current denture be converted?

Sometimes, if it fits well and is in good condition. Often a new one is the better result because it can be designed around the attachments from the start. We will look at yours and tell you honestly.

Do I still take it out at night?

Yes. It comes out for cleaning and to give the gums a rest overnight, and the attachments need cleaning too.

Do the clips wear out?

The nylon inserts wear with use and get replaced periodically — it is a quick appointment and a small cost. That is normal maintenance, not a failure.

Will I be able to eat normally?

Most people manage a much wider range of food than with a conventional denture. It is not identical to natural teeth, and we would rather set that expectation now than have you disappointed later.
